A M King’s Greenville Office Volunteers Build “Giving Garden” at Greer Soup Kitchen
Greer, SC— The Greer Soup Kitchen in Upstate South Carolina has a new vegetable garden, thanks to 11 hardworking volunteers from A M King’s Greenville office. In one day, the team constructed 30 raised planting beds, removed weeds, tilled dirt and added topsoil. The effort will allow soup kitchen volunteers to plant vegetables, fruits and herbs to be used in the kitchen, and ultimately, feed those in need.
Greer Soup Kitchen, a part of Daily Bread Ministries, is a nonprofit, charitable organization that was founded in 1990 when concerned citizens observed that people in their own town were going hungry. Today more than 150 meals are served each day in a modern, restaurant-style facility. In the past year, the kitchen has served more than 50,000 meals.
The harvest from the newly constructed “Giving Garden” will supplement the contributions of food and money so generously donated by private citizens, churches and businesses. The goal is include birdhouses, storage for garden tools, rain collection barrels and pebble walkways. The group from A M King has already promised to return to lay the pathways.
“What enticed me the most about the Greer Soup Kitchen project was the ripple effect that just one day volunteering, some lumber, and some dirt could have,” explains A M King Project Manager Ben Lehnerer. “For years to come, the Greer Soup Kitchen will be able to see benefits of cutting their food costs down and providing more fresh and healthy meals to people in need.”
