ABC Carolinas Supports Future Talent Pipeline in Charlotte with Relaunch of High School Build-A-SHED Competition
Associated Builders and Contractors of the Carolinas (ABC Carolinas) is excited to relaunch the Charlotte Build-A-SHED competition on November 15, 2024. This program engages local high school students and partners them with general contractors and specialty trade contractors to complete a 6’ x 8’-6” playhouse in seven hours. The objective of this competition is to promote interest in construction-related careers through experiential learning.
The competition includes a two-day building competition of a the playhouse, with a functional door opening, single-hung windows, and exterior siding. Teams are comprised of six students and a teacher who will work with their mentors in the months leading up to the competition. Teams will be competing against each other to complete the shed using the same blueprint and being mentored by volunteer construction industry professionals in safety, quality, planning, scheduling and communication.
The following teams will take part in this year’s event with the corresponding General Contractor and Specialty Contractor:
A.L. Brown High School: Frampton Construction and Starr Electric Company
Independence High School: Swinerton and Doggett Concrete
Palisades High School: Messer Construction and Charlotte Mechanical
