Artificial Intelligence’s Role in Construction

by Brian Gallagher, Graycor on September 22, 2024

Experts predict that artificial intelligence (AI) will follow in the footsteps of technologies like search engines and cloud computing, becoming a mainstream tool across industries. Despite challenges such as limited expertise and data complexity, AI is making strides in construction projects, though adoption in this field still trails other sectors. A McKinsey report highlights the growing potential of AI in engineering and construction, with organizations that effectively leverage AI poised to gain the most.

The construction industry is at a pivotal moment for AI adoption. Stable conditions in the U.S. manufacturing and nonresidential construction markets, despite some spending declines, underscore the need for technologies that enhance communication, collaboration, and efficiency. AI has been proven to reduce risks, improve safety, and boost project performance, particularly in cost management and scheduling.

AI’s role in capital projects spans all phases, from planning through construction. In the planning phase, AI helps analyze complex data—such as site conditions and regulations—enabling predictive analysis that aids in site selection and risk mitigation. During design, AI-driven tools can enhance BIM models, improving clash detection and speeding up decision-making. Preconstruction benefits from AI’s ability to analyze market data for more accurate cost estimation, scheduling, and resource allocation.

AI also plays a critical role in construction, where it enhances real-time project management by comparing progress to plans, conducting supply chain analysis, and running predictive scenarios. Technologies like drones, robotics, and IoT sensors, powered by AI, further optimize project efficiency and safety.

AI is also helping reduce carbon emissions in construction by optimizing processes and material selection, improving energy efficiency, and extending the lifespan of building systems. As AI evolves, it continues to transform how we design, build, and manage facilities, providing a competitive advantage to those who embrace its potential.

PWC’s research identifies six building blocks for AI adoption in construction: defining business applications, managing data, adopting technology, building the right team, establishing clear processes, and fostering a culture of AI trust. Organizations that adopt these strategies are well-positioned to harness AI’s full potential, leading to more predictable and successful project outcomes.

In conclusion, AI is poised to revolutionize construction, from site selection to project completion, improving productivity, quality, and sustainability along the way. Organizations that embrace this technology will gain a significant edge in the increasingly competitive construction industry.
