ABC’s Construction Backlog Indicator Steady; Construction Material Costs Increase
The Construction Backlog Indicator declined to 9.0 months in September, but contractors remained confident according to an ABC member survey. Construction input prices rose 0.2% in September compared to the previous month, according to an ABC analysis of U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Producer Price Index data released today.
Biden Administration Actions Could Harm the Construction Industry
According to an October 2023 survey of ABC contractor members, 98% of respondents stated that controversial prevailing wage and government-registered apprenticeship policies imposed by the Inflation Reduction Act will make them less likely to bid on clean energy projects. ABC also opposes the National Labor Relations Board’s joint employer final rule. The final rule rescinds and replaces the ABC-supported 2020 NLRB joint employer final rule, which provided clear criteria for companies to apply when determining their joint employer status. “Unfortunately, the Biden NLRB decided to dramatically expand joint-employer liability under the National Labor Relations Act, which will disrupt existing contractor and subcontractor relationships throughout the construction industry,” said Ben Brubeck, ABC vice president of regulatory, labor and state affairs.
STEP Winners Recognized at the ABC Carolinas Safety Summit; A Roadmap for Construction Tech Adoption
The 2023 Safety Summit focused on the Total Human Health Initiative which is a critical link in the STEP Program, which has been designed to help members focus and improve the complete health, wellness, and livelihood of their employees. Winners of the STEP award were also recognized. ABC released its third annual construction technology report, which consists of a framework and complementary real-life case studies from ABC contractors that utilize construction technologies to strengthen safety, workflows and profits.
