Behind the Hardhat: A Recap of the 2025 ABC Carolinas Construction Convention
The 2025 ABC Carolinas Construction Convention, themed “Behind the Hardhat: Collaboration in Construction,” was recently held at the Embassy Suites by Hilton Myrtle Beach Ocean Resort, drawing construction professionals from across the region for three days of inspiration, networking, and innovation.

The convention kicked off Wednesday, August 6, with a spirited golf tournament at The Dye Club at Barefoot Resort—a perfect mix of competition and camaraderie as players enjoyed an early-morning shotgun start. That evening, a welcome reception at Seaside Vista created a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere. As attendees sipped chilled beverages and reconnected or met new faces, the tone was set: business with a dose of pleasure.
Thursday’s programming blended high-impact learning with interactive fun. In a riveting opening session, “FLASH” Bobbi Doorenbos of Afterburner, a decorated fighter pilot and leadership coach, delivered the keynote The Fighter Pilot Mindset. Drawing on more than 1,300 flight hours in F-16s and MQ-1s along with high-level roles including service at the White House, she captivated the audience with lessons on focus, adaptability, and high-stakes leadership. Breakout sessions followed, spotlighting construction strategy with Brian Gallagher of CarolinaPower/PPC Partners, workforce development with Jennifer Wilkerson of NCCER, and AI in construction with Kristi Pronovost, DeAnna Thomas, and Patrick Scarpati from ABC National.

Networking didn’t stop for lunch—Thursday afternoon’s FLEX mini-golf and mingling event offered lighthearted competition and casual connection. As the sun set, attendees boarded the elegant Barefoot Queen Sunset Cruise, savoring sea breezes and scenic views while building business bonds in an unforgettable setting. That evening, the Free Enterprise Alliance Legislative Reception provided a polished forum for fostering industry-government dialogue, complemented by hors d’oeuvres in the Vintage 12 Area.
Friday, August 8, brought a slate of deep-dive discussions and forward-looking insights. The morning began with a robust vendor showcase, featuring supply chain partners demonstrating tools, technology, and resources—complete with giveaways and opportunities to forge new supplier relationships. A standout panel, Ownership Transfer & Management Succession—Lessons from the Front Line, featured experts Michael Mangum of FMI, Brett Walsh of Graycor, Allen Amsler of McCrory Construction, Art Odom of David Allen, and Matt Godwin of FMI. Their perspectives on business continuity and leadership transitions sparked thoughtful dialogue and strategic takeaways.
“The ABC Convention featured exciting sessions on Ownership Transfer and Management Succession, with experts sharing strategies for sustainable business transitions,” said Christi Powell, President and CEO of ABC Carolinas. “These insights inspired our members to plan for long-term success in their business. Anirban Basu also delivered a unique economic update, offering a forward-looking perspective on the industry.”
Legal clarity followed with an ABC Chair–led legal update presented by David Pugh, helping attendees navigate the evolving compliance landscape. The convention concluded with a forward-looking economic update from Anirban Basu, ABC’s Chief Economist, who offered a compelling macro-economic outlook vital for strategic planning. With closing remarks set for 12:45 p.m., the convention officially wrapped up at 1:00 p.m. Friday.
From the golf course to signature receptions and the vendor showcase, this event created countless informal and formal networking moments. Attendees connected with industry leaders, exchanged ideas, and delved into topics ranging from AI and workforce strategies to economic forecasting. The variety of formats—from keynote talks and panels to social activities—kept energy high and engagement meaningful throughout the convention.
“Our members built lasting relationships through a Barefoot Queen Sunset Cruise, a Legislative Reception with Senator Goldfinch, and fun events like the Dye Club golf tournament and FLEX Mini Golf,” Powell noted.
The 2025 ABC Carolinas Construction Convention characterized what regional construction events do best—uniting professionals to inspire growth, cultivate collaboration, and power progress.
