Boone Hall Plantation’s Historic Cotton Gin Renovation and Addition Singled Out by Preservation Society of Charleston
On Thursday, February 29, 2024, the Preservation Society of Charleston (PSC) hosted the 70th Carolopolis Awards, an awards program created in 1953 to recognize outstanding achievement in historic preservation. These award-winning projects are the result of extraordinary private and public efforts to maintain the historic character and authenticity of Charleston and the Lowcountry.
This year, the Preservation Society of Charleston recognized a diverse group of 12 winning projects from the region. Carolopolis plaques are awarded across five categories: Exterior, Interior, New Construction, Resilience, and Pro Merito.
SouthCon Building Group, based in Mount Pleasant, was part of a team that received two awards for their project, “Boone Hall Plantation | 1850s Cotton Gin House Renovation/Addition.” This project, located on the grounds of Boone Hall Plantation & Gardens in Mount Pleasant, was honored for both Exterior and Interior renovations. Boone Hall’s Gin House was the only project to win in more than one category.
Boone Hall Plantation & Gardens is one of South Carolina’s most popular tourist sites and America’s most photographed plantation. Built more than 170 years ago to house the plantation’s original cotton gin, the two-story “Gin House” had been “shuttered” for 15 years when SouthCon began construction in 2021. The purpose of this high-profile restoration project was to create a multi-purpose event space set against a timeless backdrop.
The award-winning project team included Goff D’Antonio Associates, architect; EM Structural Engineers; DWG Consulting Engineers (MEP); and SouthCon Building Group, general contractor.
“Carolopolis projects are rarely about any one individual, but how groups of those devoted to stewardship can collectively work together to tackle challenges that can appear insurmountable,” said Brian Turner, President & CEO of the Preservation Society.
