Brian King Elected to 2021 Class of Design-Build Institute of America’s College of Fellows

by GroundBreak Carolinas on November 23, 2021

Brian T. King, Founder and President of A M King, an integrated Design-Build firm based in Charlotte, has been inducted into the Design-Build Institute of America’s (DBIA) 2021 Class of DBIA Fellows. King and four other inductees were honored on November 2 during the 2021 Design-Build Conference & Expo in Denver, CO.

“Based on input from industry peers and leaders, as well as a review of the documented contributions you have made to the Design-Build Industry, this honor is well deserved,” said Jim L. Whitaker, FAIA, FDBIA, NCARB, Chancellor of the DBIA College of Fellows, in his congratulatory letter to King.

Elevation to Designated Design-Build Professional™ Fellow status is the highest level of DBIA Certification and acknowledges the achievements of the nation’s most accomplished Design-Build professionals. DBIA Fellow status is limited to two percent of Designated Design-Build Professionals who are elected to Fellowship by a jury of their peers. Out of the entire 37-member College of Fellows, King is one of only two from the Carolinas.

“I am humbled to be part of an elite group of industry leaders from across the country that includes one of my mentors, Don Warren, the only other DBIA Fellow from the Carolinas. Don not only holds the distinction of being one of DBIA’s Founding Fathers (while President of the former Suitt Construction) and a member of DBIA’S Inaugural Class of DBIA Fellows, but he is also a longtime friend,” said King.

King’s entire professional career, which spans more than 35 years, has focused on the management and execution of Design-Build projects for multiple clients, in diverse industries and geographic regions. In 2004, he founded A M King, a fully integrated Design-Build firm for which he was the sole owner before converting A M King into an employee-owned company in 2020. King remains President of the firm, which under his leadership has grown into a firm averaging $120+ million in annual revenues, 100 percent of which is negotiated.

During his distinguished career, King has been directly responsible for the design and construction of more than 20 million square feet of complicated and specialized facilities, with a total project investment amount close to $2.5 billion. This work represents various strategic markets, with projects ranging in value from $10,000 to $100 million.

King was among the first and youngest to earn DBIA accreditation as a Designated Design-Build Professional, having completed the inaugural DBIA exam in a pilot program in 1999 – before the formal rollout of this rigorous certification program to the U.S. design and construction industry.

More about DBIA’s College of Fellows

DBIA established the College of Fellows in 2018 as a new designation within the organization. Being a DBIA Fellow is an elite status that recognizes the achievements of the most accomplished Designated Design-Build Professionals. By meeting rigorous requirements and making notable contributions to DBIA and Design-Build in general, these professionals have proven to be the best of the best in the Design-Build industry and by honoring them with Fellow status, DBIA is celebrating their career achievements and dedication to promoting DBIA principles. A new class is selected each year and is honored during the annual Design-Build Conference & Expo.
