CarolinaPower Introduces Next Generation to Construction through Middle School Job-Shadowing Program

by Joan Krause, Senior Editor, GroundBreak Carolinas on January 6, 2023

To say that 12-year-old Trinton Durham was enthusiastic about spending an entire school day at CarolinaPower’s Greenville office would be an understatement. Trinton, son of CarolinaPower electrician Matt Durham, recently participated in his school’s career exploration program for sixth graders, which offered students the opportunity to experience a “day in the life” of a profession of their choice. For Trinton, “electrician” was his first and only pick.

On a Friday morning at 8 a.m., Trinton was handed an information-packed agenda designed to give him a well-rounded overview of CarolinaPower’s business. Throughout the day, he spent increments of time with select employees who explained their respective roles and areas of focus – from finance, preconstruction and Virtual Design and Construction (VDC), to prefabrication, service, and project management. He also learned about the construction process and the importance of safety. He especially enjoyed spending time with CarolinaPower President Chris Moore, who has been with the company since its inception 24 years ago.

When asked about his dream position, Trinton was quick to say, “electrician/superintendent.” Elaborating, he said “I want to follow in my dad’s footsteps. It has been my dream to work here.”

Recapping the highlights of his job-shadowing day, Trinton noted, “I really liked being with President Chris and everyone else. I also liked being out in the warehouse making boxes for sheetrock.”

Crystal Burnett, office manager, commented “It was our pleasure to host Trinton for the day. At CarolinaPower, we take advantage of every opportunity to introduce young people to the construction industry – and job shadowing is a great way for preteens to experience the world of electrical contracting first-hand. The virtual reality segment was a big hit with Trinton.”

Trinton is a student at Dacusville Middle School in Easley, South Carolina, part of the School District of Pickens County in the Upstate region of the state.

Participating students were asked to complete a questionnaire following their job-shadowing experience. Here are some of Trinton’s responses related to his desired position of electrician/superintendent.:

  • What skills are required to perform your job? Math and computer technology.
  • What is the required dress code to perform your job? Hard hat, safety glasses, and gloves.
  • What type of personality is best suited for your job? Hard working.

Trinton summarized his much anticipated “workday” at CarolinaPower, saying “I had the best time here… the best time I’ve ever had, really. My most favorite thing to do is come to this office – period.”

Trinton had the chance to experience Virtual Reality (VR) as part of his job-shadowing day at CarolinaPower.
