CarolinaPower Keeps Safety Top-of-Mind with Unique Calendar

by Joan Krause, GroundBreak Carolinas on April 19, 2018

For CarolinaPower employees, safety is a way of life. Red and black “safety seal” stickers featuring the phrase, “SAFETY: Working Together for Tomorrow,” are visible on just about everything – from hardhats, to gang boxes, to apparel, signage, and marketing materials. Based in Upstate South Carolina, CarolinaPower, is a leading employee-owned electrical contractor serving industrial, commercial, healthcare and federal market sectors in the two-state Carolinas region.

As part of its comprehensive safety program, CarolinaPower’s parent company annually sponsors a contest intended to keep the importance of safety front and center – internally and externally – throughout the year. The resulting colorful 12-month wall calendar – distributed to employees, clients and visitors – spreads the word about safety through the lens of the younger generation. The calendar is populated with artwork created by the children of CarolinaPower employees and those of its sister companies in Georgia, Alabama, and Wisconsin. Each month spotlights a different “aspiring artist,” together with his or her original artwork and personal safety message.

The idea behind the calendar: When we teach our children safety, it will carry through to their behavior and make them accountable for their own safety.

Three of the featured “artists’ in the 2018 Kids Safety Calendar are the daughters of Johnny Monroe, branch manager of CarolinaPower’s office in Charleston, South Carolina. They are: Ayden Monroe, age 13; Launa Monroe, age 11; and Emma Monroe, age 15. A total of 17 kids submitted entries for the calendar.

We applaud Ayden, Launa and Emma for their creative contributions,” said Chris Moore, Vice President and General Manager. “CarolinaPower prides itself on fostering a culture of safety that extends into our personal lives. Raising awareness about safety around family and friends is an important part of our company culture.”

The Kids Safety Calendar has built a loyal following over the years. “Clients start asking me around Christmas when the new calendar is coming out. It’s become quite popular and they eagerly await its arrival. We can’t ask for a better measure of success,” said Moore.

About the Kids Safety Calendar – The contest was open to employees’ children under the age of 18. Twelve crayon drawings were chosen and the artists were eligible for an award. The call for entries included the following instructions:

  1. Drawings should contain the company’s line of work (construction, service work and line work) and safe work practices.
  2. Employees should take the time to talk to their children about what we do and how important safety is to us at PPC Partners and how safety at home carries through our culture. Every accident is preventable at home, work or play.

About CarolinaPower — Headquartered in Greer, S.C., CarolinaPower serves industrial, commercial, healthcare and federal market sectors in South Carolina and North Carolina. CarolinaPower was established nearly 20 years ago as part of Ga.-based MetroPower, Inc. Now a division of its own within the PPC Partners family, CarolinaPower has a total of four offices in South Carolina — Greenville, Charleston, Columbia and North Augusta — with plans for opening additional offices in North Carolina.
