Carolinas Rank High in Area Development’s Annual Top States for Doing Business
Southern states continue to lead the way in creating favorable business environments, with Georgia once again taking the top spot in Area Development’s annual rankings of the Top States for Doing Business. For the eleventh consecutive year, Georgia has demonstrated excellence in key areas like infrastructure, workforce development, and business incentives.
In this year’s Area Development rankings, both North Carolina and South Carolina also ranked highly, reinforcing the Southern states’ dominance in creating business-friendly environments.
South Carolina secured the second spot, and continues to be a significant player in the manufacturing and automotive sectors. The state’s success can be attributed to its business-friendly regulatory environment, robust workforce development programs, and strategic logistics infrastructure, including proximity to major ports like the Port of Charleston. South Carolina’s incentive programs, combined with a lower cost of doing business, make it an attractive option for companies looking to relocate or expand. The state’s strong focus on apprenticeships and technical training programs also helps to ensure that its labor force is equipped with the skills needed to meet industry demands, particularly in advanced manufacturing and aerospace.
North Carolina secured the fourth spot, largely due to its exceptional workforce readiness, strong infrastructure, and competitive business costs. The state has attracted numerous tech and biotech firms, thanks to its Research Triangle Park, which offers access to skilled talent and cutting-edge research. North Carolina’s investment in education and workforce training, particularly through partnerships with universities and community colleges, has helped maintain a pipeline of skilled labor. The state’s favorable tax policies, coupled with its accessible location on the East Coast, make it a prime destination for businesses in industries like life sciences, aerospace, and information technology.
The rankings are based on a survey of industry consultants who evaluate states on 14 factors critical to business success, including the availability of skilled labor, tax incentives, and infrastructure. Georgia’s success is attributed to initiatives like its Georgia Quick Start program, which provides tailored workforce training for industries like manufacturing and IT. Additionally, the state benefits from world-class logistics, with assets such as Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport and the Port of Savannah, both key to efficient global trade.
Georgia’s competitive tax environment, strategic investments, and strong logistics infrastructure continue to position it as an ideal location for businesses seeking growth and long-term stability.
