Chairman of Little Reflects on Mecklenburg County’s Vietnam Veterans Memorial
Designed by Little and dedicated more than 30 years ago on Memorial Day in 1989, the Mecklenburg County Vietnam Veterans Memorial pays tribute to the military personnel who lost their lives during the Vietnam War. Located near uptown Charlotte in Thompson Park, it was built through community fundraising efforts using only private donations. Its granite arc, surrounded by majestic oak trees, showcases a timeline of the war and features poignant poems by a local Vietnam veteran while recognizing fallen Mecklenburg County soldiers.
“It was a great privilege to work with a dedicated group of veterans to design this memorial honoring the men and women from Mecklenburg County who served—and the 105 who died—in the Vietnam War,” expressed Phil Kuttner, Little Board Chair and Partner. “Additionally, these veterans wanted to ensure that future generations would remember their sacrifices. For 35 years since, visits to this memorial have become an annual experience for students in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools.”
On this day of remembrance, as we pause to pay our heartfelt respects to the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for our nation, let us strive to build a world worthy of their bravery.
