D.H. Griffin’s 57 Years of Demolition Legacy in Greensboro, NC and Beyond

by GroundBreak Staff on October 12, 2016

In 1959, with a truck, a sledgehammer, and a $5 business license, nineteen-year old D.H. Griffin started a legacy. A self-starter who repurposed salvage materials to build his home and make clotheslines, Griffin is now the patriarch of DHG Companies, a vertically-integrated group that performs demolition and other construction services in the public and private sectors. DHG is a family business; D.H.’s son, David Jr., is the company President, his daughters, Melody and Benita are the Vice President and Secretary/Treasurer, respectively.

The company has demolished over 25,000 structures to date and various company branches across ten states are currently working on more than 100 projects. There is strong community involvement for DHG as well. The Griffin family sponsors two annual golf classics. The D.H. Griffin Golf Classic takes place in Greensboro every fall and has raised over $2 million for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. The Jamestown Civitan—Marylene F. Griffin Memorial Gold Classic takes place in Jamestown every spring to honor Marylene, the late Griffin matriarch.

DHG was selected by New York City’s Department of Design and Construction to be the lead demolition consultant for the post-911 cleanup—the project was completed with a $400 million cost reduction and nine months ahead of schedule, so the city could begin the long healing process. David Jr. had visited the city just two days after the attack to see what his company could do to help. “I’m proud of the work we did on this project, helping the city take the first step in recovery,” he says.

Stories like DHG constructions legacy are just some of the many in The Who’s Who in Building & Construction, the biannual regional construction magazine and buyers’ guide from The Blue Book Network®. The magazine contains the latest local projects, news, and tips, available both in print and online. The industry’s best are catalogued in the guide by name and trade, so it’s easy to make a fast hiring or buying decision from the office or the jobsite. The accompanying Showcase is the region’s best networking and education event—where the Network and magazine come to life.

Be sure to check out Raleigh’s Who’s Who Showcase on Wednesday, October 12th, at the PNC Arena.
