Davis & Floyd Project Spotlight: Stormwater Master Plan for Town of Cheraw, S.C.

by Helen Johnson on October 29, 2020

Recent hurricane events and aging infrastructure have caused historic flooding throughout the Town of Cheraw, South Carolina. Using FEMA funding administered through the South Carolina Emergency Management Division (SCEMD), the Town will be developing a comprehensive stormwater master plan. Master planning will be aimed at improving long-term community resiliency against future flood hazards.

In addition to field survey, inventory, and data collection, Davis & Floyd (D|F) provided the following solutions to address the challenge at hand:

  • Developed and implemented innovative cloud-based, geospatial survey/inventory programs to enhance survey efficiency and productivity.
  • Created and maintained innovative cloud-based, geospatial flood reporting applications for receiving and cataloging public input.
  • Designed and maintained dynamic web mapping applications to promote client/public engagement and provided real-time project updates.

D|F Services

  • Surveying GIS Mapping
  • Stormwater Inventory & Assessment
  • Watershed Assessment
  • 1D/2D Hydrologic/Hydraulic Modeling Cost Estimating
  • Cost-Benefit Analysis Master Planning

About the Town of Cheraw

Cheraw is located in the northeastern midlands of South Carolina, 40 minutes from I-95 at Florence or Dillon, 85 miles northeast of Columbia, SC and 75 miles southeast of Charlotte, NC.  Cheraw is easily reached by SC 9, US 52 or US 1.

Cheraw is one of South Carolina’s oldest and most picturesque inland towns. Named for the Cheraw Indians, Cheraw began as a small trading post at the head of navigation on the Great Pee Dee River. Joseph and Eli Kershaw were granted a part of what is now Cheraw in 1768, and shortly thereafter laid out the present wide streets and town green. This is now the nucleus of the 213 acre National Register Cheraw Historic District, rich with gardens and parks and the architectural legacy of more than 200 years.
