GroundBreak Carolinas to be Media Sponsor for Clemson CSM Symposium
GroundBreak Carolinas is pleased to be the Media Sponsor for Clemson University’s 2nd Annual Construction Industry Symposium offered by Clemson’s Department of Construction Science and Management (CSM). Last year’s event held in Charlotte was so well received, the University decided to make the Symposium an annual event. This year’s Symposium will be held on October 12th in Greenville, South Carolina. The event sponsor is BB&T/BB&T Insurance Services. “The Ever-Changing World of Construction: Today’s Challenges, Tomorrow’s Opportunities” will be held at the Embassy Suites Golf Resort & Conference Center on Verdae Boulevard in Greenville on Thursday, October 12, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Participants in the one-day Symposium will take away valuable knowledge and perspective from leading industry experts about the critical issues impacting the construction industry today, as well as insight into preparing for anticipated changes in the future. Like last year, the Symposium is expected to draw a cross-section of attendees from across the region — facility owners, construction companies, specialty contractors, designers, vendors and other construction industry service providers.
“Attendees will have a chance to interact with the best in the business, while hearing their perspectives on facing today’s industry challenges and those in the foreseeable future,” said Mike Jackson, head of Clemson’s Department of Construction Science and Management. “The entire day is intended to be interactive. We had such tremendous feedback from last year’s Symposium and we did our best to incorporate those ideas and suggestions into this year’s program. Our intent is to keep the Symposium centrally located in the Carolinas, rotating it among various cities and venues from year to year.”
Jackson assumed his role as CSM Department Chair this summer following the retirement of Roger Liska. Jackson comes to Clemson from Georgia Southern University where he was Chair of the Department of Civil Engineering and Construction Management. “I’ve not seen or heard of anything remotely similar to the format of this event. So much information packed into a single day. And the speakers and panelists are world-class. Clemson’s Construction Symposium is truly unique and I’m very proud to have the opportunity to be a part of it going forward. This is a worthy legacy of Dr. Liska’s service to the university and the profession.”
Morning and afternoon keynote addresses will be followed by a variety of panel discussions led by industry experts who will delve into the issues impacting the construction industry today with special focus on the future.
Morning Preview: Kermit Baker, Chief Economist for the American Institute of Architects(AIA) will kick off the day talking about the impact of the economy on our industry in a session titled, with “Construction Outlook: Challenges & Opportunities.” This will be followed by a discussion themed “Successful Tactics to Grow Tomorrow’s Workforce,” led by Steve Greene, Vice President of NCCER — originally known as the National Center for Construction Education and Research. The morning will be rounded out by a panel openly discussing the diversity challenges facing the AEC industry. Diversity panelists include Nancy Juneau, Chief Executive Officer of Juneau Construction Company, and Garland Burton, Construction Business Developer and Supply Chain Consultant.
Afternoon Preview: The afternoon will begin with an overview of the WELL Building Standard, a relatively new building standard focused exclusively on human health and wellness that is catching on around the country. This highly anticipated session will be led by one of the nation’s select few experts in this field Carolyn Rickard, AIA, LEED AP BD+C, WELL AP (Provisional), Little’s Global Practice Leader for Workplace. This will be followed by a case study of the design and construction challenges associated with a recently completed WELL certified corporate headquarters project. Facilitating the case study will be Amanda Atkinson, WELL AP and LEED AP BD+C, Senior Manager, Sustainable Services, for Holder Construction Company, and JT Odom, Senior Mechanical Engineer with Barrett Woodyard & Associates.
The day will wrap up with “Owners’ Expectations of Their Selected Design and Construction Teams,” an interactive discussion with panelists Clay Addison, CCCA, CCP, LEED AP, President of C.T. Addison Consulting, and Jon Papps, PMP, Director of Facilities Development at Greenville Health System.

Registration is $275 per person for Clemson University CSM Corporate Partner companies and $300 per person for non-Corporate Partners. Registration is limited and will close on October 2, 2017. The registration cost includes lunch, break refreshments, workshop materials and hotel parking for only the day of the event.
