Keith Poole of Trehel Offers Commercial Contractor’s Perspective on Markets & Trends

by GroundBreak Carolinas Staff on July 7, 2024

GroundBreak Carolinas is pleased to share thoughts and insights from key construction industry leaders in the Carolinas. Keith Poole, President and Chief Operating Officer of Trehel, offers a commercial contractor’s perspective as we enter the second half of 2024.

What’s your outlook on the construction industry for the second half of 2024?

If what we are currently experiencing as a company is an indicator, the second half of 2024 will be busy for the construction industry. At the same time, the combination of interest rates and an election year has introduced uncertainty in project outlooks across various market segments and at least caused some owners to slow into a “wait and see” position. Despite these conditions, I am optimistic about the industry especially within the Upstate of South Carolina.

What trends or particular markets are you most excited about?

First off, it is great to be doing business in South Carolina and enjoying the stability that our area offers. All of the U-Haul trucks are headed here for a reason.  People are coming for job opportunities and the quality of life. The Upstate will continue to be short on housing for years to come, supporting housing in every variety. Pockets of the industrial market continue to perform well, and I am encouraged at how much very large mixed-use development is either under construction or well into planning.

What value do you continue to see in business diversification?

The ability to pivot between markets has been great for us over the years. It allows us to adapt to changing market conditions and explore new opportunities. It also enables us to support clients through their own growth.

Are there any new building trends you’re currently following closely?

Mass timber has positively impacted other regions of the country and is becoming a more viable option in our area. It may lead to increased efficiency and more sustainable design in projects that you would not have suspected just a few years ago.

Trehel has provided construction management, general contracting, and design-build services in South Carolina, North Carolina, and Georgia for more than 40 years. Visit their website to learn more.
