Mass Timber as Sustainable Design Solution: A ULI Panel

On October 9, ULI South Carolina Upstate hosted a Panel Discussion on Mass Timber — an increasingly popular sustainable design solution that also has substantial benefits to a developer’s bottom line.

Co-sponsored by Britt, Peters and Associates and Clemson University’s Wood Utilization + Design Institute the panel featured experts Hans-Erik Blomgren from Katerrra and David Impson and Graham Montgomery from Britt, Peters and Associates.

Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) has been used for decades in Europe but is fairly new to the United States.  CLT is produced in factories by gluing pieces of timber into panels. The panels are then cross-laid to form larger sections that are precut for specific building plans. The pieces are shipped to construction sites and can be assembled by just a few workers.

Veteran’s Village in East Asheville, NC will be the tallest CLT building in the Southeast.
