McCrory Selected as Design-Builder of Innovative New Processing Facility for Last Step Recycling in Chester, SC

by GroundBreak Staff Report on October 15, 2021

Columbia, South Carolina — McCrory Construction has been awarded a design-build contract by Last Step Recycling, LLC (LSR) for a new 230,000-square-foot processing facility situated on a 54-acre site in Chester Technology Park in Chester, S.C.

Founded in 2019, Last Step Recycling processes automotive shredder residue (ASR) to capture metals such as copper, aluminum, and other resources that would normally go to a landfill. These recycled metals are then sold for use in appliances, automobiles, and technology equipment across numerous industries. The company’s new processing facility in Chester will receive ASR from other recycling plants that have shredded car parts and other scrap metal for recycling.

“McCrory is proud to be the design-builder of choice for Last Step Recycling as they implement their first-ever building program to house a next-generation, proprietary process. Our team’s ability to deliver the project on a fast-track in keeping with their budget, was a differentiating factor.  Not only does McCrory have single-source responsibility for design and construction, but we are also handling the process equipment purchase and installation,” said McCrory’s Stephen Cooper, Senior Project Manager.

Construction is well underway with foundations expected to start this month.  The $46 million facility is scheduled for completion at the end of June 2022 – less than 12 months after breaking ground. McCrory’s architectural design partner for this significant project is McMillan Pazdan Smith, with Alliance Consulting Engineers, Inc. providing civil design, and Brit Peters and Associates providing structural design.

“It’s exciting to be at the forefront in helping LSR create a facility for its unique operation. Beyond the obvious green implications of reducing waste and preserving natural resources, the remaining automotive shredder material after processing is clean enough to be used as surface cover for landfills,” said Cooper.

When in full operation, LSR will have the capacity to accept and process over 360,000 tons of automotive shredder residue annually.
