Meet NAWIC Palmetto Chapter’s (Charleston) 2020-2021 Leadership
This year has brought endless changes to the world as we knew it. Murder hornets and mystery seeds aside, COVID-19 has introduced a need for flexibility in business that does not come naturally to most. Gone are days of regular status meetings and in-person networking. We have adapted to a new language centered on all things virtual – school, work… life. These ideas of a new normal have largely been embraced by the construction industry.
On construction sites all over, new safety protocol has been implemented, ensuring the health and wellness of these critical employees. Many areas see continued growth, and for this we could not be prouder – for these folks are enhancing the success of our industry and persevering – despite adversity. A group that knows something about adversity is the Palmetto #385 chapter of National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC).
Recently celebrating their second anniversary, NAWIC Palmetto #385 continues to set precedents, outsmart stereotypes, and create a new ‘normal’. Despite not being able to celebrate in person, these women enter their third year with a renewed sense of purpose and new leadership. The inaugural board has cycled out, making way for the first real change in leadership since the chapter’s inception. Led by Amanda Redick (President), these women are Sandra Marlowe (Vice President), Antonia Gonzalez-Periera (Treasurer), Megan Bultman (Recording Secretary), Allison Brown (Corresponding Secretary), Christie McMichael, Joanie Allen, Margie Jewell (Directors), and Janet Bates (Immediate Past President).
These women embody the NAWIC national tagline of ‘Leading Builders, Building Leaders’ and are each a formidable force in this challenging industry.
This chapter of women in construction started in 2018 with intense focus and a strong sense of purpose. They continue to be, despite the current pandemic, remarkable for both this industry and the Greater Charleston area. This year has introduced a bevy of challenges to the construction industry, to feminism, to life. When many women are sidelined and relegated to assuming family responsibility to muck through the 2020-ness that we have all been faced with, these women show up to work, stay engaged in this professional organization, and repeatedly knock the proverbial ball out the park. Cheers, ladies – continue to be what sets you apart from the rest.
