Piedmont Women’s Center Expresses Gratitude to Local Construction Community for Modern New Facility
Significant donations of time and material from the local construction community, supplemented by private monetary donations, has made a dream come true for Piedmont Women’s Center in Greenville, S.C. The faith-based organization now has a modern facility five times larger than its previous clinic thanks to the in-kind contributions of architects, engineering firms, general contractors, specialty trade contractors, and material suppliers. A building dedication ceremony for the new Piedmont Women’s Center Pregnancy Medical Clinic was held on Sunday, May 5, 2019.
According to the Rob Wess, director of construction and development, and others involved in the project, the teamwork was impressive — especially given the size of the project and the fact that many of the firms are competitors under normal business circumstances.
“The project was unprecedented in our community. Hundreds of people worked tirelessly to deliver a state-of-the-art medical clinic that will serve us for years to come,” said Wess. “We have been blessed with the involvement of so many trades from the local construction industry. It’s remarkable to see many competitors working side by side on this project. Three architectural firms, 7 engineering firms, 10 general contractors and more than 150 subcontractors and suppliers all working together in harmony! It’s also amazing to build a facility of this scope and size without contracts with any of the companies involved. It was a project completed by their word and a handshake.”
Over the project’s two-and-a-half-year lifespan, donations included a wide array of products and services, such as architectural design, engineering, building systems design, interior design, HVAV, electrical, plumbing, concrete, framing and other trades providing both materials and labor.
The new 8,000 square-foot, $2 million facility will allow Piedmont Women’s Center to expand its free women’s services. The construction community’s donations covered more than 75 percent of the building cost, or $1.6 million.
