Power UP Workshop Gives Five-Year-Olds a Glimpse of Construction Technology
Power UP, Inc. founder Dr. Mittie Cannon believes it’s never too early to start paving the way for a possible career in engineering and construction. Just before the December 2018 holiday break, Don Wilcher, Director of Manufacturing and Technology at Jefferson State Community College, led a Power UP workshop for very young children at Robinson Elementary School. A total of 23 boys and girls from two kindergarten classes had the opportunity to learn about electronics and coding through hands-on activities. As evidenced by the kids’ reaction, and that of their teacher Mrs. Cothran, the one-day session was a big hit.
Dr. Cannon noted that the parental feedback has been equally enthusiastic. “Prior to the workshop with the students, Power UP hosted a parent meeting and the responses from the parents were filled with excitement. Some even asked when will Power UP provide a program for the adults as well,” she said. “Of course, the most inspiring aspect of the program is seeing how bright the kids are!”
Rooted in the Southeast, Power UP Inc. is a one-of-a-kind, non-profit organization dedicated to developing a diversified and strong workforce for the construction industry. Power UP is making plans to start bringing some of its programs to the Carolinas in 2019.
