Program and Panelists Preview: Chix Dig It – Celebrating Women in Construction Luncheon

by Joan Krause on June 11, 2019

GroundBreak Carolinas is honored to once again be the media partner for the annual Chix Dig It — Celebrating Women in Construction luncheon. Now in its fourth year, the 2019 Chix Dig It luncheon is scheduled for Thursday, June 20 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Prestonwood Country Club in Cary, N.C.

This year’s theme is “Men as Allies: Breaking Barriers and Leading the Way.” Adrienne Cole, President and CEO of the Greater Raleigh Chamber of Commerce, will be serving as the 2019 emcee and panel moderator. Panelists include Novant Health’s David Park, Senior Vice President of Corporate Real Estate and Facilities Construction; N.C. Department of Transportation’s (NCDOT) Bobby Lewis, Chief Operating Officer; and Duke Energy’s Rufus Jackson, Vice President of Delivery Operations – Carolinas East.

Chix Dig It exists to attract the best and brightest women to the architectural, design and construction field. The annual Chix Dig It fundraiser provides scholarships to young women who are pursuing a career in AEC. This year’s Chix Dig It scholarship will be awarded to Wake Technical Community College and The Vernon Malone College and Career Academy (CCA).  Patricia Lucas Smith, President of Raleigh-based Serving 4 Success and founder of Chix Dig It, made this announcement last week. Past Chix Dig It scholarship recipients include North Carolina State University and North Carolina A&T University.

Wake County’s first Career and Technical Education (CTE) High School is located in the former Coca-Cola plant on South Wilmington Street in Raleigh. The Vernon Malone College and Career Academy is a collaborative endeavor between the Wake County Public School System, Wake Technical Community College and Wake County Government. Students at Vernon Malone CCA will be able to complete studies in one of the seven CTE programs as part of their high school graduation credits.

Through an academic foundation, paired with career-informed courses and work-based learning experiences, graduates of the Vernon Malone CCA will be prepared to continue on to a four-year university, or apply their earned credits towards an AAS degree, certificate or diploma program at Wake Technical Community College.
