Safety Summit: ABC Carolinas Announces 2023 STEP Award Recipients
Sending workers home safely every night is a common goal among construction firms. Founded in 1989 as a safety benchmarking and improvement tool, the Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) STEP program has evolved into a world-class safety management system that dramatically improves safety performance among participants regardless of company size or type of work.
“Of the 106 member companies in North Carolina and South Carolina that submitted this year, 16 are new to the program. In fact, our contractor participation leads the nation at 40 percent,” said Sara Breeggemann, Director of Workforce Development, ABC Carolinas.
This year’s STEP awards were presented at the 2023 ABC Carolinas Safety Summit in Charlotte, N.C. on Friday October 6, 2023. (See list of winners below).
Safety Summit Highlights and Takeaways
ABC Carolina’s 2023 Safety Summit focused on the Total Human Health Initiative which is a critical link in the STEP Program, which has been designed to help members focus and improve the complete health, wellness, and livelihood of their employees. The THHI program matrix and resources were designed to provide simple and effective means and methods to build and customize any member program from basic to advanced regardless of the size of your organization.
During the Safety Summit, ABC Carolinas Chapter invited individuals from member companies to offer their insights on topics including Mental/Social Wellness, Physical/Occupational Wellness, Intellectual/Environmental Wellness, and Financial Wellness. Attendees learned how to take initiatives from each of these categories and implement them into their organization to make sure total human health is a priority for their employees.

About STEP – Participating ABC member firms measure their safety processes and policies on 25 key components through a detailed questionnaire with the goal of implementing or enhancing safety programs that reduce jobsite incidents. Participating companies score their level of achievement for each component on a weighted point scale and document their incident rates (TRIR and EMR). Companies receive a recognition level of Diamond, Platinum, Gold, Silver, or Bronze based on this data.
