SC Chamber Urges Senators to Invest in Roads
Road funding South Carolina continues to be debated in the Legislature. The South Carolina Chamber of Commerce announced, in a letter to SC State Senators, that the Senate vote on H.3516, which generates long-term, sustainable revenue for state roads and bridges, and votes on related amendments will be considered for the Chamber’s 2017 Legislative Scorecard.
“The time is now for Senators to take action – lives and jobs are at stake,” said Ted Pitts, SC Chamber President and CEO. “With less than 12 days remaining in the legislative session, the business community joins people from every part of South Carolina in calling on Senators to do their job and provide a long-term fix for our state’s roads. The cost of doing nothing is too high.”
The letter to members of the Senate reads in part:
The South Carolina Chamber of Commerce supports the passage of H.3516 which generates long-term, sustainable revenue for our state’s roads and bridges, nearly half of which are rated in “poor” condition. The business community calls for passage of this bill as it provides a diversified revenue stream and includes all motorists in the solution, not just South Carolina taxpayers.
The business community respectfully requests that the Senate approve a bill that generates at least $600 million in sustainable, recurring revenue for our roads and bridges, and sets up a DOT Commission and agency which is fully accountable to the Governor.
