SeamonWhiteside Founder Stuart Whiteside Retires After Four Decades of Shaping the Carolinas

by GroundBreak Carolinas Staff on October 3, 2025

Firm celebrates its founder as he transitions into a mentorship and advisory role

SeamonWhiteside (SW+), a full-service site design firm with offices throughout the Carolinas today announced the retirement of one of its founders, Stuart Whiteside, PE, effective November 1, 2025. The vision Whiteside established more than four decades ago remains at the heart of SW+, and continues to shape today’s leadership team. Whiteside will continue to support the firm in a new part-time role as a trusted advisor on the board of directors and leadership team, offering mentorship and guidance on special projects and initiatives.

Whiteside co-founded SeamonWhiteside along with Kenny Seamon 40 years ago and has been instrumental in shaping the company’s trajectory and culture of care. Under his leadership, SW+ helped shape the growth of Mount Pleasant with projects including I’On Community and Mount Pleasant Town Centre, then expanded across the Carolinas, opening new offices, and adding new service sectors. Through challenges like the Great Recession and the COVID-19 pandemic, Whiteside’s leadership and commitment to the firm’s people and principles helped guide the company forward.

“Forty years ago my dad and Stuart created something truly special, blending civil engineering with landscape architecture within a company that culturally reflected their personalities and high level of care,” said Russ Seamon, president of SeamonWhiteside. “Stuart has been mentoring the next level of leadership, including myself, and passing the torch in a way that embraces that culture while continuing to elevate the site design experience.”

In recent years, Whiteside worked with the leadership team to ensure a smooth transition plan, establishing a formal board of directors and strengthening leadership at every level. His continued role as advisor reflects both his long-standing influence and the firm’s commitment to remaining innovative and community-focused.

Looking ahead, SW+ plans to honor Whiteside’s legacy by dedicating conference rooms to its founders and hosting a celebration in his honor. While stepping back from day-to-day responsibilities, Whiteside looks forward to spending more time traveling with his wife Francie, enjoying his grandchildren, and playing more golf.

SeamonWhiteside remains poised for growth with a strong leadership team, a culture of innovation, and a dedication to serving the Carolinas through exceptional site design and community-driven philanthropy initiatives such as Green Square.

“Stuart’s legacy is enduring,” said Seamon. “He built a company that’s not only successful but also positioned to thrive for decades to come. I speak for all employees of SeamonWhiteside when I say that we are forever grateful for what Stuart has done in co-founding this company and positioning it for future success as an organization that continues to prioritize caring for its people, its clients, and the communities it serves.”
