Showcasing Diverse Designers: AIA South Carolina to Host SAY IT LOUD-SC Exhibition

by GroundBreak Carolinas Staff Report on October 19, 2023

AIA South Carolina is pleased to announce dates for bringing the internationally recognized SAY IT LOUD exhibition to South Carolina in 2024! In collaboration with Beyond the Built Environment and the newly established SC Chapter of the National Organization of Minority Architects (SCNOMA), AIA South Carolina (AIASC) will host SAY IT LOUD-South Carolina during January-February 2024 at the new Center for Architecture in downtown Columbia.

SAY IT LOUD-South Carolina will highlight the contributions of BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) and women designers, architects, engineers, planners and students from around the state. During this month-long exhibition, the Center for Architecture will be open to the public to visit and share in their stories and accomplishments through lectures, events, and K-12 programming and help further the discussion on equity and diversity in the profession and South Carolina’s built environment.

Catherine Knight, design leader with integrated design-build firm A M King, and AIASC’s equity director for 2023-2024, explained the significance of the exhibit, saying “We are so excited to host the Say It Loud South Carolina exhibit featuring design professionals and architects from around the Palmetto State. We look forward to bringing more visibility and diversity to the profession of architecture and creating a greater connection between the public and our design community. Our goal is to continue to grow the pipeline of future designers and encourage and celebrate more diverse voices in the architecture field. This exhibit will start at the Center of Architecture in Columbia, but there are plans in the works for it to become a traveling exhibit to both the Lowcountry and Upstate to maximize the opportunities for the public to view the exhibit.”
