Skilled Crafts the Focus of Upcoming Career & Family Fest at Construction Training Center (CTC)
Columbia, S.C.-based Construction Training Foundation, Inc. will host its inaugural Career & Family Fest on the campus of the Construction Training Center (CTC) on Friday, July 21, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. CTC is located at 7355 Garners Ferry Road, Columbia, SC 29209.
The Construction Training Center (CTC) specializes in training individuals in rod busting and form carpentry — two sought-after skills in the Carolinas as well as other regions of the country. CTC students get instruction in construction terminology, technique, tools, equipment and materials used in rod busting and form carpentry. They also learn a variety of safety practices, as well as basic blueprint reading. These, together with the basic computer skills they acquire, enhance employability.
One of only a few accredited schools for training skilled crafts in South Carolina, the CTC is expanding its training offerings to include pipefitting, electrical, and brick masonry, beginning in July 2017.
The purpose of the Construction Training Center’s Career& Family Fest, which is free to the public, is to raise awareness about the school, as well as educate parents and middle/high-school students about the importance of skilled craft training — specifically, its critical role in determining the future of the construction industry.
The event will include a variety of exciting activities for the entire family to enjoy. Construction companies from across the state will be there to give hands-on skills demonstrations, and staffing agencies will provide information on near-term and long-term job opportunities. Supporting agencies — both public and private — will share information on financial aid, scholarships and other assistance available to families and individuals.
“We are really excited about hosting this special event! We offer employable skills to male and female students for permanent job placement in the construction industry, and we want the public to know what the CTC has to offer,” said Jackie Workman, CTC’s community relations coordinator.
“There simply are not enough skilled craftspeople to fill the available jobs these days,” Workman continued. “Too often people view the construction industry as less appealing than other fields like manufacturing. Through our Career & Family Fest, we are hoping to get the word out that construction is a great field to go into. It’s the second biggest industry in our state. Graduates of our 16-week programs can earn $20-$30 per hour… and we assist with placing people.”
The Construction Training Center was established in 2000 by Founder and President John E. Cammon, who is also an instructor. CTC is certified by the South Carolina Commission of Higher Education as a nonpublic post-secondary institution, licensed to award certificates in construction. CTC is also certified by the Lower Savannah Workforce Development Area (LSWDA) Board, the Santee-Lynches Workforce Development Board (WDB), and the Catawba Regional Workforce Investment Board, and is a certified National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) training site. CTC is fully accredited by the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges (ACCSC).
