South Carolina LLR/OSHA Announces Recipients of 2017 Safety Awards

by Joan Krause on April 26, 2017

The South Carolina Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation’s (LLR) Division of Labor recognized a total of 41 South Carolina businesses for their demonstrated commitment to safety at an awards reception in Columbia on Tuesday,  April 25, 2017.

More than half of this year’s South Carolina-Safety Award recipients were from the construction industry. View full list of winners.

Awards were presented in three categories:

Palmetto Shining Star — The employer met at least one of the following criteria: no recordable injuries or illnesses during calendar year 2016; at least a 40 percent reduction between 2015 and 2016 employer incidence rates; at least 75 percent below national incidence rate; worked one million or more safe work hours without a lost-time injury or illness.

Rising Star — The employer’s 2016 incidence rate was at least 75% lower than the 2015 national average for the respective industry.

Gleaming Star — The employer has fewer than 100 employees and demonstrated a culture of safety and health both on site and in the community.

The 2017 South Carolina Safety Awards reception was held in the Denny Auditorium on the South Carolina Fire Academy’s campus.  Award recipients were presented with certificates and given the opportunity to provide brief remarks. Following the awards ceremony, the Fire Academy offered a bus tour of the grounds where firefighters come from around South Carolina and the world for training.

This annual Safety Awards Program was established more than 20 years ago to recognize South Carolina companies’ efforts to achieve and maintain healthy and safe worksites.   New applications are available each January on https://www.scosha.llronline.com. The deadline for submission is typically the last day of February.
