T&H Wins National ACEC Engineering Excellence Award for North Charleston Pedestrian Bridge
Thomas & Hutton was honored with a National Recognition Award from the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) Engineering Excellence Awards (EEA) program for the Noisette Creek Pedestrian Bridge in North Charleston, SC. This prestigious program annually celebrates engineering achievements that exhibit innovation, creative problem-solving, and the capacity of engineering to enhance our world. Earlier this year, Noisette Creek Pedestrian Bridge was awarded an Engineering Excellence Award at the state level by ACEC-SC.
The Noisette Creek Pedestrian Bridge’s 55-foot-tall twin arches rise above an industrial skyline and are visible across the tidal waters and saltwater marshes from miles away. The bridge, owned by the City of North Charleston (City), designed by Thomas & Hutton (T&H), and constructed by Cape Romain Contractors, Inc. (CRC), is the first piece of infrastructure built in the redevelopment efforts of several city-owned industrial parcels along the Cooper River. Although a pedestrian bridge, it was designed to accommodate emergency access vehicles. The bridge is 20 feet wide by 800 feet long and provides the most direct route for emergency personnel from one City Park to another. It features an ADA-accessible overlook and landscaped planter with integral seating for educational gatherings, social events, or simply as a respite to enjoy the scenery.
Jen Hayes, T&H Structural Department Manager says “It is an honor to be recognized at the national level and a testament to what can be accomplished through excellent teamwork. From conception of the project through completion, we worked in a productive and cohesive partnership with the City of North Charleston and we were fortunate to have Cape Romain Contractors convert our vision and design into reality.”
The Noisette Creek Pedestrian Bridge was one of six winning projects from the Carolinas. Congratulations to all winners!
