Two Mashburn Projects Win Carolopolis Awards

by GroundBreak Carolinas Staff on March 22, 2024

On February 29, 2024, two projects constructed by Mashburn Construction received awards through the 70th Annual Carolopolis Awards hosted by the Preservation Society of Charleston. The event seeks to honor preservation marquee projects of the Charleston region that highlight the best of preservation work in the architecture, engineering, and construction industry. The Carolopolis Award was created in 1953 to recognize outstanding achievement in historic preservation and honors extraordinary private and public efforts to maintain the historic character and authenticity of Charleston and the Lowcountry.

332 King Street or “The Pinch” was recognized with the Pro Merito award. The project team included LS3P Associates, Morris Adjmi Architects, Method Co., MacRostie Historic Advisors LLC, DWG Consulting Engineers, Britt Peters and Associates, Inc., Remark Landscape Architecture, Cypress Engineering, and Applied Building Sciences. A major complexity included having to remove all existing floors and roof structure throughout the building and rebuilding a new structure from the ground up within the existing masonry walls. LS3P, MA Architects and Method developed an incredible interiors package that differentiates this project from any other hotel on the Peninsula.

741 Meeting Street was awarded within the New Construction category. The project team included The Middleton Group, Sottile & Sottile, Shah Architecture, Sitecast LLC, Hensley & Goerling Consulting, Tobias & West, and Wertimer & Cline. Mashburn worked with the owner and project team to construct a building that had three different structural systems. This building is a beacon of design excellence and could be considered a model for the development of the Upper Peninsula.

“Not only are we honored to have one project recognized for such a prestigious honor of as the Carolopolis Award but to have two projects honored is something we are extremely proud of,” says Richard Kinard, Executive Vice President of Mashburn Construction. “Both of these projects are representative of significant partnerships with an extensive amount of devotion and dedication to each project and the magnitude of historic preservation within the Lowcountry.”

Mashburn Construction has built a vast portfolio of historic preservation projects over the last four decades. The firm continues to be a leader within the sector in multiple markets throughout the state of South Carolina. Mashburn also brings tax credit knowledge and relationships to help fund these significant projects and ensure they are restored correctly, while maintaining the historic character of the building.
