UNC Names Joe Ockert New Assistant Director of Design Services
The University of North Carolina (UNC) Facilities Services announced that Joe Ockert will become the new assistant director of Design Services, effective Feb. 20.
Ockert has worked at UNC since 2015, when he was hired as a facilities architect in the Facilities Planning and Design Department of Facilities Services. In this role, he has served as project and design manager for numerous informal campus projects, building improvements and renovations, including the Odum Village Students Veterans Center and the Carmichael Residence Hall Makerspace.
As assistant director of Design Services, Ockert will oversee operations of the Design Services department, manage University informal capital improvement projects, and provide leadership to the in-house design and project management staff. He will continue as an active project designer, with a focus on monitoring and maintaining design quality and standards, developing project budgets and schedules, and establishing process improvements and communications within the division of Facilities Services.
Prior to working at the University, Ockert worked as an architect at several firms where he provided design services for projects at a variety of university, government and commercial facilities. He has extensive experience with directing and supervising all aspects of design and production services, budget and construction administration, and managing and coordinating consultants and project teams.
Ockert earned his bachelor of architecture from North Carolina State University. He is a member of the American Institute of Architects, and is NCARB (National Council of Architectural Registration Boards) and LEED AP (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Accredited Professional) certified.
