Update on NAWIC Chapter “Under Construction” in Greater Charleston
If you “build it” they will come? Well, they did – in all their diversity, intelligence, construction-related careers, and curiosity – come to hear about the new chapter that is currently “under construction” in NAWIC’s South Atlantic Region. On June 28, 2018, Columbia NAWIC Chapter #113 (sponsoring chapter) members were present and in force to facilitate the pre-organizational meeting for the chartering of a new chapter to include Berkeley-Charleston-Dorchester counties.
According to Susan Clary, marketing director for Mashburn Construction and incoming president of NAWIC-Columbia, Chapter #113 members worked tirelessly to coordinate two informational sessions to provide attendees an overview of NAWIC and the benefits of membership. A networking social was also held afterwards to show appreciation to sponsors – Hood Construction, Seamon Whiteside, Waste Management, Haywood Baker, McWaters, Landmark Construction, ESP Associates, Davis & Floyd, Choate Construction, and the Charleston Electrical Contractors.
“We want to give a special thank you to Dove Sifers-Putman, National President-Elect, and Kristey Stewart, South Atlantic Regional Director, for making the long trek to the event and for imparting their insight and enthusiasm,” said Clary.
Next steps: NAWIC-Columbia needs at least 25 women who work in a construction-related field within the Tri-county area to send in their completed membership applications and dues before July 26, 2018, to temporary Secretary Marie Myers, Johnson Controls Fire Protection at marie.myers78@aol.com. Assuming 25 members are signed up (with applications and paid dues in hand) before the deadline, there will be an organizational meeting on July 26.
Janet Bates, CF Evans Construction, has volunteered her time and talents to serve as the new chapter’s temporary Chair.
“Thanks to Marie and Janet for stepping up and helping us ‘build’ NAWIC’s South Atlantic Region,” said Clary.
