Views from the Salute to the Design and Construction Industry Sponsors

by GroundBreak Carolinas Staff on April 24, 2018

Once again this year, three leading design and construction industry service providers have teamed to sponsor the Salute to the Design and Construction Industry.

The GroundBreak Carolinas’ staff had three questions for each of this year’s sponsors:

BB&T Construction Risk Services

What are the key trends impacting your business (or client’s business)?
Construction project financing has impeded growth – especially in the public sector. Another topic that is often discussed as a huge concern for our clients is finding and maintaining qualified employees in the construction industry. They struggle to find qualified “field” employees and they feel like their project management staff are targets for competitors to whisk away (usually better pay and benefits). Finally, finding the right “balance” in work opportunities is a key issue in the industry. Current economic conditions are providing work opportunities, but there is the need to balance current backlogs with new projects in terms of working capital, human and capital resources, etc.

What do you foresee for the construction industry in the Upstate of South Carolina?
It seems to be booming at the moment and some of the projects are slated to last the next 12-24 months. I feel like it’s one of the most viable construction markets in the state (Charleston market is strong as well).

What unique value does your BB&T Construction Risk Services bring to companies in the construction industry?
We have been providing risk management and financial services to clients throughout the state of SC for 90+ years. We have very experienced staff that focus on commercial insurance, group benefits and contract surety services.

Elmore Goldsmith

What are the key trends impacting your business (or client’s business)?
The biggest issue impacting the construction industry is the labor shortage, particularly with subcontractors.

What do you foresee for the construction industry in the Upstate of South Carolina?
We see continued growth through the 2nd quarter of 2019.

What unique value Elmore Goldsmith bring to companies in the construction industry?
For over 40 years as relationship partners with owners, contractors and subcontractors Elmore Goldsmith’s attorneys have provided risk avoidance and mitigation measures; and strategic planning counseling and implementation based on our knowledge of the industry and our client’s business.

Elliott Davis

What are the key trends impacting your business (or client’s business)?
Availability of experienced and skilled labor, especially for the specialty trades.

What do you foresee for the construction industry in the Upstate of South Carolina?
Continued full backlog for the next two+ years. The shortage of skilled labor is presenting challenges to take on more work and general challenges in execution as a result.

What unique value does Elliott Davis bring to companies in the construction industry?
Elliott Davis offers clients a deep knowledge of all areas that impact the financial operations of contractors, all within the local geographies of the Carolinas. Our clients value our deep relationship as a trusted business advisor and accountant.
