“Chix Dig It — Celebrating Women in Construction” Luncheon to Fund Scholarships
The 2017 Chix Dig It — Celebrating Women in Construction will be held at the JB Duke Hotel in Durham, North Carolina, on Friday, June 9, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. The annual fundraiser provides scholarships to young women who are pursuing a career in architecture, design and construction.
“Chix Dig It exists to empower women in all aspects of the construction industry,” said Patricia Lucas Smith, founder of Raleigh-based Serving 4 Success, which focuses on growing sustainable opportunities in local communities. “The goal of Chix Dig It is to attract the best and brightest women to the architectural, design and construction field. We understand that there are not a lot of female role models. That’s why we make a point to visit schools and encourage female students to consider careers in construction. We want to inspire young women to keep their options open… to know that they are welcome and needed in the field.”
This year’s Chix Dig It luncheon keynote speaker is Ms. Zena Howard, Principal and Shareholder, Perkins+Will Architects, North Carolina. An inspirational role model herself, Ms. Howard, AIA, LEED AP, will give attendees insight into the world of “designing women.” In her keynote address, she will highlight her experiences as Senior Project Manager for the Smithsonian Institution’s new National Museum of African American History and Culture that recently opened on the Mall in Washington DC. As project leader, she was the point person executing the Smithsonian’s multiple decades of planning and investment in this landmark museum.
