SouthCon Building Group Receives National Excellence in Construction Award for Southern First Bank’s New Regional Headquarters in Charleston
SouthCon Building Group takes top honors in ABC’s National Excellence in Construction competition.
Charleston, SC — SouthCon Building Group, a full-service general contractor based in Mount Pleasant, garnered national attention last week when it was recognized with a National “Best in Class” Excellence in Construction Award from the Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC). SouthCon received ABC’s highest-level award – the Eagle – for its exceptional performance in delivering Southern First Bank’s new Regional Headquarters facility located in the heart of Charleston’s historic district.
SouthCon’s President and CEO Chris Spach and Project Manager Brandon Needham accepted the award at ABC’s 27th annual Excellence in Construction (EIC) gala in Long Beach, California, on March 21, 2018. SouthCon won in the category, General Contracting/Commercial $5-$10 million.

SouthCon became eligible to compete in ABC’s National EIC Awards competition after winning the Eagle award at the Carolinas chapter level last November. National winners were selected from hundreds of entries submitted from across the country. They were judged on complexity, attractiveness, unique challenges overcome, completion time, workmanship, innovation, safety and cost. A panel of industry experts served as the competition’s judges. This year’s panel included representatives from the Building Owners and Managers Association International, the Smithsonian Facilities Construction Division, the Construction Management Association of America, Engineering News-Record, Design-Build Institute of America and various construction-related firms nationwide.
About the Project — Southern First Bank’s Regional Headquarters is a new three-story, Class A office building located at 80 Calhoun Street in historic Charleston. In addition to meeting the stringent architectural requirements set forth by the Charleston Board of Architectural Review, SouthCon Building Group had to overcome difficulties related to an extremely tight project site surrounded by busy narrow streets and residences less than five feet away; poor soil conditions; unforeseen site utility issues; the need for ongoing pedestrian security; a remote staging and laydown area located 1.5 miles away; frequent site flooding from high tides and rainfall; and numerous cultural events and other activities that drew thousands of visitors to the immediate project area.
