SouthCon Building Group Wins ABC Eagle Award for Southern First Bank’s Regional Headquarters

Charleston, SC — SouthCon Building Group, a full-service general contractor based in Mount Pleasant, was recently recognized with the 2017 Excellence in Construction (EIC) Award from the Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) of the Carolinas. The company was singled out for its distinguished performance in delivering Southern First Bank’s Regional Headquarters facility, a new three-story, Class A office building located at 80 Calhoun Street in the heart of Charleston’s historic district. SouthCon Building Group received ABC’s highest-level award — the Eagle — in the General Contracting, $5 million -$10 million category. The award was presented during ABC Carolinas’ 16th Annual Excellence in Construction Awards banquet on November 16, 2017, at the Hilton Charlotte Center City in Charlotte, N.C.

“We are very proud to be recognized for our work, especially by our industry peers. Even before we started construction, we knew that this project would pose multiple challenges, most of which were directly related to the site’s location on the Charleston peninsula. Winning a ‘Best of Class’ Eagle Award for this effort clearly demonstrates our team’s ability to deliver quality work despite extraordinarily challenging circumstances,” said SouthCon Building Group’s President and CEO Chris Spach.

ABC Carolinas’ Annual EIC Awards competition is open to general contractors and specialty contractors in the two-state region. Having won at the Carolinas chapter level, SouthCon Building Group became eligible to compete in ABC’s National EIC Awards competition for which winners will be announced at the organization’s annual conference in Long Beach, California, in March 2018.

About the Project — This logistically complex project required close coordination with multiple City departments concurrently. In addition to meeting the stringent architectural requirements set forth by the Charleston Board of Architectural Review, SouthCon Building Group had to overcome difficulties related to an extremely tight project site surrounded by busy narrow streets and residences less than five feet away; poor soil conditions; unforeseen site utility issues; the need for ongoing pedestrian security; a remote staging and laydown area located 1.5 miles away; frequent site flooding from high tides and rainfall; and numerous cultural events and other activities that drew thousands of visitors to the immediate project area. The completed facility complements neighboring buildings, both old and new; yet its special architectural elements effectively meet Southern First Bank’s expectations for setting the building apart within the community.
