Three Waldrop Mechanical Projects in South Carolina Recognized for Excellence in Construction

by GroundBreak Staff on March 23, 2017

A national construction association recognized Waldrop Mechanical Services of Spartanburg, SC with three Excellence in Construction (EIC) awards. Waldrop, a full-service mechanical contracting firm, recently received “Best in Class” National Excellence in Construction Awards from the Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) for two Upstate projects, and was national runner-up for a project in the Lowcountry. Waldrop brought home the Eagle Award — ABC’s highest level award — for its Summer 2016 mechanical renovation work inside four buildings at Furman University’s Lakeside Residence Hall complex. Waldrop won its other Eagle Award for an emergency HVAC system replacement and renovation at Oconee County’s Walhalla Elementary School.

In each instance, Waldrop completed the work on a very aggressive schedule mandated by the short time frame of summer break. Waldrop’s team for the Furman Lakeside student housing renovation garnered additional recognition when it was singled out with ABC’s Productivity Award for innovative productivity methods. Waldrop received ABC’s Pyramid Award — the second-highest award — for the challenging chiller plant replacement and piping distribution system project it designed-built for Cummins, Inc. in Charleston.

Held in on March 2, 2017 in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, the ABCs 27th Annual Excellence in Construction Awards gala was a celebration of the best in construction. The Excellence in Construction awards program is the industry’s leading competition that honors both general and specialty contractors for innovative and high-quality merit shop construction projects. Out of 100-plus national awards presented this year, Waldrop was the only South Carolina-headquartered company to bring home a “Best in Class” award in any category, at any level. The panel of judges included representatives from the Design-Build Institute of America, Engineering News-Record, the Construction Users Roundtable, and the National Association of Women in Construction, and representatives from higher education, among others.

Waldrop qualified for ABC’s national competition by winning at the ABC Carolinas Chapter level last November.

Founded in 1970, Waldrop has offices in Spartanburg and Greenville. Waldrop has two main operating divisions: Waldrop Mechanical Services focuses on the commercial, institutional, industrial and healthcare sectors, while Waldrop Plumbing, Heating & Air focuses on the residential market. Waldrop is an active member of ABC of the Carolinas’ Upstate Council, which is comprised of nearly 200 local and regional member companies in Greater Greenville-Spartanburg-Anderson for which construction is their primary business or a major market focus.
