CarolinaPower Supports AGC Electrical Skills Competition for High Schoolers

by Helen Johnson on November 22, 2019

CarolinaPower, a leading electrical contractor with four offices in South Carolina – including North Augusta, recently joined forces with its GA-based sister company, MetroPower, to introduce future career opportunities to aspiring electricians.

On November 14, AGC Georgia’s regional Workforce Development Alliance provided Augusta-area high school students the opportunity to compete in more than 10 categories, including electrical.  Tom Darst, David Farmer, Colton Poole and Madison Younginer represented CarolinaPower at the all-day event. They spoke with a number of potential future apprentices, providing information about career paths in electrical construction.

“These competitions provide a platform for students to take pride in their work and compete in a way that is similar to sporting events. It’s great to see them have a way to grow their skills in such a realistic environment,” said Younginer, who spends a significant amount of time serving the company’s multi-level recruiting efforts – trade and professional.  “These students are the future of our industry, and we are excited to introduce them to all that our segment of the construction industry has to offer.”

The East Georgia Skills Challenge was one of five identical events held across Georgia this fall.  In total, over 600 students representing 75 high schools competed statewide.  In addition to electrical, students competed in broadcast news production, blueprint reading, cabinet making, carpentry, HVAC, plumbing, masonry, roofing, welding, and TeamWorks.  Winners of each regional event are moving on to the state SkillsUSA competition slated for March 2020 in Atlanta.
