CarolinaPower’s Becca Holleran, Assistant Project Manager, Reflects on Career in Construction

Becca Holleran is an assistant project manager with leading regional electrical contractor, CarolinaPower, in Columbia, South Carolina. Becca moved into project management from field administration, bringing a strong understanding of onsite operations, documentation control, and team coordination. In a short interview during Women in Construction month (March), Becca discussed her career path history, what she enjoys most about her role at CarolinaPower, and why others should give the construction industry a chance.

What inspired you to pursue a career in construction?

I actually got into construction unexpectedly. A job opportunity came up with a leading general contractor. I went for it and ended up landing a field admin role. Once I got on the jobsite, I realized how much I enjoyed the fast pace and being part of something that you can physically see come together.

What does Women in Construction Week (WIC) mean to you?

WIC week means a lot to me because it’s about recognizing how far women have come in an industry that hasn’t always been easy to break into. As a mom to a daughter, it’s especially important – I want her to grow up knowing she can step into any field she chooses, including ones like construction.

What’s something you’re especially proud of accomplishing in your career?

I’m proud of sticking with it and pushing myself to learn in an industry that was completely new to me. There was a steep learning curve, still is, but I’ve shown up, asked questions, and have proved to myself that I can succeed in this space.

How have you seen the industry evolve for women over the years?

The construction industry has become more open and inclusive for women, even in the relatively short time I’ve been a part of it. There are more women on jobsites, in leadership roles, and being taken seriously for their skills and knowledge. It’s not perfect, but what industry is? All I can say is that I’ve seen progress in a positive light.

What do you enjoy most about your role at CarolinaPower?

Most definitely, it’s being part of the entire process and seeing a project come to life. There is something so rewarding about watching all the moving pieces come together and knowing you played a part in it. And being on the CarolinaPower team means being part of something bigger than myself. It’s about working alongside a team that supports each other and takes pride in the work we do every day. As a mom, it’s important to me to be part of a company that I can be proud of and that sets a strong example for my daughter.

What advice would you give to young women considering a career in this field?

Go for it, even if you don’t have a background in construction. There’s so much to learn, and a lot of people are willing to teach you if you’re willing to show up and put in the effort.

If you could talk to your younger self, what would you say?

I’d tell my younger self to be confident, stay strong, and not limit yourself. You’re going to build a life you’re proud of – and one day, you’ll be setting an example for your daughter, which will make it all worth it.
